Rose Tree Park Amphitheater 12-2023
by Brian Barolo
Another year has gone by for Rose Tree Park Amphitheater this year, 2023. But I was just there two days ago. I was there at the top of the park on the main walkway. Price Stevenson, the audio engineer, needed some assistance climbing two trees. Since I have always been his climber, who better to call? No! Not Ghostbusters!
I climbed two trees and replaced banana plugs with these new technology self-crimping lever wire connectors. Yes, I used an extension ladder to get up high enough to climb into the trees. I then replaced the old bananas with the new levers. All the speakers are broadcasting that cheerful holiday music on the walkway at Rose Tree Park.
Can you believe I am 64 1/2 years of age and still climbing trees! Well, anyhoo, I actually enjoyed that simple little job. I really enjoyed climbing in the tree. Happy Holidays!
Following is the original blog. Read. Enjoy.
Rose Tree Park Amphitheater has come to the end of its 2018 Summer Music Festival. This great little outdoor amphitheater is located just outside Media, Pennsylvania. There were 44 shows produced this past summer in only a couple of months. The season ranges from mid-June through mid-August. That is five shows per week. This year, 44 shows were performed in eight weeks. That makes this venue the busiest in Delaware County, PA. There is a large variety of musical performances, and just about every musical niche is covered. Whether you prefer rock, jazz, symphony, classic, or anything in between, there is a concert for everyone. Free concerts open to the public are the greatest.
Being a small but complete amphitheater, full production is given in all aspects. A full professional sound and lighting system with some backdrops and effects exists. For every show, professional technicians operate all the different parts of every concert. A sound engineer, monitor engineer, lighting board operator, and back-line roadies are all part of every show. Without these professionals, these shows would be garbage and not enjoyable to watch and listen to. The performers on stage give their best from their talents, but most people do not factor in all the help put into amplifying the show with audio and lighting and such. The band is the most important part of a show, but there is a need for specialty talents in technology that the crew of technicians brings to the show. Every concert must have two parts: the performers and the technicians.
I, myself, have many different talents within the industry of productions/ shows. Being involved with the production company that handles all the Rose Tree Park Amphitheater concerts and using my talents, I installed sound and lights in early May. Then, in mid to late August, we dismantled the entire production. That entails taking down the PA speakers and stage lighting instruments. All of the equipment then goes into storage for the winter till the following year. Most of this work has to be done using a snorkel or boom lift with all-terrain capabilities. After all, the equipment has been hanging outdoors for nearly four months. Rain or shine, some lighting, and sixteen fixtures remain completely uncovered and get soaked. Fortunately, they are all older lighting fixtures that have zero electronics inside. Lighting is much more advanced today with LEDs, which must incur electronics and various computer chips that cannot get wet. So, to install and uninstall, a lift must be used. I am certified to operate such a lift and a full-fledged Lighting technician. I did this job with such precision that I completed the lift’s end in less than 2 hours and 15 minutes. Yes, the money has now become extremely good. Half of a day’s pay was earned in just over two hours. The mindset to work in this manner is where everything should be based. The belief in completing a job compared to working slowly to gain more hours working for more pay is two totally different aspects. I would much rather have a job to do and complete the project for a set amount rather than scrapping for hours. With this belief, I can set my pace with a goal in mind. Rose Tree Ampitheater and Price Stevenson offer that opportunity to me. This is one job I very much enjoy doing. Set up or tear down. Life should be as good. If you are given opportunities, grab them and enjoy life, even when working.
The best first date is a huge challenge for men or women. The challenge on first dates can be tremendous. A first date may also become very rewarding. The excitement of going out on a date for the very first time is out of this world. When you do not know the person or you have recently met them and you do get together for a meal or an activity there is so much to learn about the other person. The biggest questions are about how to start the conversation. What subjects to talk about? How personal do you get? How deep into what subjects? Do you keep the conversation very light and do not delve into deep chat about anything. What do you talk about to get to know the other person? Most of these questions may refer more to a blind date. These are the most difficult to get started in conversation. You are almost tip-toeing around the talking to feel out with the other person the proper subject to chat about. These are the most awkward moments on a first date. It is always very easy to start out by talking about the weather. That is if you really need an icebreaker to get started. Do not continue weather chat or you will kill the date and probably not get a second date. If you do start off with weather chat, then immediately find a reference and change the subject. Anything is better talk then weather.
If you are not a good conversation starter then ask questions about them. Talk about their outfit or hair. You may ask questions about what they do for a living. Where are they from or where they grew up? A good chat starter is asking about hobbies and what they do for fun. Are they physically active and do they work out or play sports. Do they like movies and what is their favorite? Are they Foodies even if you are out for a bite to eat. Maybe the next date you will go to a more upscale restaurant with a different cuisine and do some foodie exploration. Asking questions will open up conversations to no end. If you fade out of one subject then ask another question about that subject or a new one and continue the talk. The first date is all about getting to know a little bit about the other person. The only way that is going to happen is by talking to one another and asking questions. If both parties feel comfortable then the conversation will usually go pretty smooth after getting started by making a few inquiries about each other.
On a blind date getting started in conversing is usually the toughest. You need to step out of your comfort zone and break past the anxiety and fear. That knot in your stomach is there for a reason. You must get past that anguish and force yourself to become outgoing and start talking. You best beware though, you do not want to be a chatterer and talk about nothing. You will not look confident and the other person may fade away from you. Now your first date is going to suck and chances of a second date is probably null and void. Be aware of the content you are chatting about. Keep your words interesting and exciting to your date. Make sure your subjects are interesting enough to keep them involved. If you bore your date with garbage chat then you will most likely cut the date short, not get a kiss and definitely not get a second date. Blind Dates must be kept very interesting or you wasted your time.
A first date can be extremely exciting if you have met the person and have had talked a few times. Now you have broken the ice with each other and are already starting to feel comfortable. This pre dating conversation saves a ton of anxiety and builds more excitement. You have both gotten over the frustration of what to say to that person, because you have both introduced yourselves to one another and gotten over the stumbling blocks of the initial conversation. That very first introduction may have the positive energies needed to eventually ask that person out on a date. The very first ‘one-on-one’ introduction can make or break a possible future relationship. So choose you words properly and act accordingly. Good positive chats with that person over and over helps both parties become relaxed with the other. This also cuts out any negative feelings and steers you both in the direction of a possible first date. Chances are it will be mutual and good.
First Dates are really what you make them. You really must feel a little something for the person you wish to date. It always helps if the two of you have some sort of common interest. If you met at the gym, then you both are about health. If you meet someone at work, shopping, concert, bar or wherever, then there is somewhat common interests which is enough to strike some feelings for the other person. Therefore, feelings will grow and so will conversation. Now you are starting to learn about them and that can very easily lead up to asking for a date. At this point if you do get a first date, things should run pretty smooth with the exception of the excitement. That is only natural as humans have feelings. If you are excited and so is your date then there are many positive feelings flowing. With this as the start of the date, almost nothing can go wrong. Chances of a good date will happen and that should lead to future dates. You are on your way to a possible relationship.
I had a first date recently after a 19 year relationship. It was amazing, but then again I have not been on a date in close to 20 years. I almost felt like a teenager. It was definitely uplifting and very exciting. I did have to reach for some conversation starters, but she carried quite a bit of the conversation and that evened it out pretty much. We had a good dinner date and then stopped for a drink on the way to taking her home. There the date continued for a couple hours of chat. The conversation opened us both up a bit to feel much more comfortable with each other. I walked her to her door to say good night and ask for second date if she was interested. She said, “of course, I’d really like that…”. So I leaned in and gave her a kiss goodnight and she grabbed me, pulled me in tight and planted a major kiss back on to me.
Yes, I scored a second date with this girl! I had a great first date. Good Luck to you!
When was your last first date and how did it go?

Starting a new job is a huge step for all people. Not one person should feel as tho they are the only one to have ever had that feeling. Yes, that feeling is like no other. We know it is associated with emotion. It can be exciting or anxious. You can be looking forward to the new challenge or do you fear what you are walking into. That feeling that controls us is so powerful. How do we contain those emotions so we do not mess up. Our intended goal should always be that we are going to ‘be the best that we can be’! As long as you go into whatever the situation is with that attitude, it is possible to control the negative vibrations.
The stress of starting a new job can be overwhelming to the point of causing depression from having to get out of your comfort zone. We always revert directly back to our comfort zone immediately as soon as we feel a touch of fear. All of these different emotions are totally connected to each other. The toughest thing to do is keep them all under wraps and out of the way of the more important ones which lead us to victory. That victory is us being able to get out of our comfort zone and perform in a positive manner. We only want to do a great job and impress the boss along with proving to the fellow employees that you are worthy of the job.
Getting started on a new job entails so many changes within our lives. Not only do we have to get out of our comfort zone but we must adapt to all of the differences that are happening immediately since we made the change. You are now going to travel to a different location. What will be your method of travel? Car, train, plane, bus, trolley, Uber or by foot. The time to travel comes into play cause this is time you must take out of your day to transport yourself to work and home. If by auto, what will your travel route be? Time, miles, tolls and fuel are now the major part of the work day. Public transportation sticks to a rigid time schedule and the costs of tickets or passes. You must also get to the actual stops for pick up and drop off. Now you must get to the actual location and back. Therefore, time becomes a concern. Before you start your new career at whatever location it is suggested to travel the course at least once to help yourself become familiar with the routing and time constraints.
The first impression is a crucial step that must be done. At the interview you will obtain a good perspective of how the company works. You will see your new place of employment. Is it clean or dirty. How should you dress for work? Did you meet any other employees? Are they welcoming or shrugging their shoulders? Do you get a good or bad vibe from the workers. Are they efficient or sloppy? The first impression can be off putting or exciting. Being the newest employee you want to present yourself as high up the ladder as you can. This is a little trick to cause some concern over the other workers that you may have a better work ethic. Presenting yourself as very knowledgeable goes a very long way with older employees. The sooner that you are able to connect with some of the key employees the better life will be for you at work. Try to meet as many people as possible as you tour your new place of employment. This always helps get you started smoothly.
Pay and Benefits are always a concern when starting a new job. You should definitely research what the average pay is for that position you have applied for. You may feel you deserve more or have a set minimum which is what you may need to survive in life. Most companies will always try to hire less expensive employees all the time. That is a regular practice around the world. Is there room for advancement and if so are you willing to start working for a bit less for now as long as there are raises down the road. These are decisions you must make prior to taking the job. What are the benefits if they are offering any. The main one is health insurance. This benefit can actually be part of your pay. Are you working for a salary or hourly? What is the rate you are getting paid? Can you live on this income? You definitely need to get all of those answers prior to starting any new job.
I, myself, just started a new job recently. Yes, as confident as I may appear, I became very excited and at the same time felt anxious. Which one of those two feelings was the correct one to follow. Either one was a challenge that I chose to accept. No matter what the feelings were I was adamant about starting this new job. I had left the workforce for a few years and tried working from home for myself. I became broke and needed a new source of income. So I reached out and found a new job with a young company that was in the same basic business. I did my interview and settled for a pay rate they could afford. I met as many of the workers as possible and am fitting in right away. I brought my expertise to this company and now I am a cherished employee. Things can go very well as long as you obtain the correct mindset and bring in a higher level of work etiquette. Cover all of your bases, do your due diligence and research and bring your best game to the table when starting any new job. Good Luck. Bring your A game!

Mom Mom Passed
My daughter called me yesterday evening with some gravely sad news. The unfortunate passing of her grandmother on her mother’s side of the family. She had gotten up in age and was becoming very frail as most of us humans will do due to the never ending aging process. What is a person to do? After all, we are unable to stop getting older. It is impossible! Mom Mom and Pop Pop were getting into the eighties and that is a long life even though no one wants to die. They were pretty healthy and took good care of themselves. Along with eating healthy they were active and tried to take care of each other as most couples will do.
Time has passed and Mom Mom started having problems eating and keeping weight on. She was getting very skinny and her body was becoming very frail, that may have had everything to do with the cause of her death. This frailty may have been part of the situation leading to her passing. If you become so frail that you are unable to get up after a fall, then becoming so weak can lead to dire life and death catastrophes. Not one individual ever believes that they are not capable of standing, walking and getting around by themselves with out the help of others. As we get older our minds may still be very active and we tell ourselves that we do not need the assistance of others to just get around. This is a very tricky game that our mind plays on us. This is so far from the truth, but it is extremely hard to accept when we become in need of others guidance and help. The same goes when we must turn in our driver’s license and are no longer able to be independent enough to drive away at any time.
Back in the day there was a commercial for an emergency button you wore around your neck. In case of an emergency you push the button and help is sent to you immediatly. It went like this, “I have fallen and I can’t get up”. If you remember that commercial then you know that this simple system works when elders need some security of being able to get medical assistance when in an emergency. An emergency would be if an elder person fell down and may not be able to get back up. Now that was one of the original alerts made for older people or those with failing health. Nowadays there are much newer and advanced emergency alerts due to the advancement of technology . They make some of these alerts to be triggered if some one is to even just fall down. Gravity will trigger these mechanisms and there is no need to actually have to push a button. What if you became unconscious and were not able to push that button to alert emergency help. The worst will happen and that is what happened to MomMom. I do not know if she even had any sort of emergency button or not.
When you are old and happily living with your partner you never believe you will ever need such a device. Life is great and nothing bad will ever happen to you or your other half. You always count on your partner to help with what ever you need help with and visa versa. You both kind of cover each other with every day life. No one believes they need these devices when living with a life partner. You have each other and don’t need much from anyone else. Not always true as in this situation with what caused MomMom to pass. Even if she had a button she may not have had the ability to push a button. No one is absolutely positive of how this went down, but I will try to explain it the best that I am able to from the way my daughter explained it to me is how I will try to to transcribe it.
PopPop was taking a nap from 3-4 in the afternoon as he always does. It was extremely cold or frigid outside and for some reason MomMom went outside onto the porch during his nap. Everything was frozen due to the extreme climate leaving ice everywhere. We believe that when she was outside heading back in she slipped and fell due to the ice on the porch. She may or may not have been knocked unconscious, but obviously could not get up or even crawl back indoors. If she was aware and called for help no-one heard her. There are no close neighbors and PopPop was sleeping and did not hear her if she was calling out. It being so cold out and MomMom having fallen, she may have hit her head and got knocked out or was unable physically to move then she may have froze to death or had a heart attack. which one happened first we do not know. It is too late to be concerned about the details. What happened was extremely sad.
The point to this story is about having emergency precautions in place and always on alert for people who may posibly need a touch of looking after. After all, as I mentioned earlier about having to give up your driver’s licsense is decided by tests given to all people who wish to drive. If you are unable to passs all of the tests you will not be able to drive. This will happen to everyone at some point in their life. The same goes with our physical attributes like walking and seeing. As we grow older we to tend too start losing our motor skills and we become slower paced. It is really up to each individual and their loved ones to make the choice to bring alerts into their life in case of emergencies. The biggest problem is called stubborness. Most of us refuse to admit that we may posssibly need a little looking after as we grow older. Do not be embarresed to have an alert sysytem if you are at all concerned about your physical abilities. Nobody has to know but you and your closest loved ones, so there should not be any embaressment. To take care of your health in every manner possible is the correct way to live. Be smart and be safe.
Health for Beginners Part 1
The question of course is not why do I need health? The question is why do I need to work at it? The question is, in this day and age, why do I need EXTRA nutrition? The question is – well its all too confusing. One day its too much salt, then its not enough salt then its sugar then its fructose then its… its all too confusing. So why bother – I am fine. And of course the biggest of them all – if, IF, I was to do something – and not everything – where would I start? Great questions. And the simple answer is – it depends. So no simple answers then?
Well it depends on what state of health you are in now. It depends on how much exercise, physical activity you do now, it depends on what age you are now. It depends. But the best thing to do when you are starting, anything…is to start. And that’s what this little series will do – give you places to start.
Your question that began – in this day and age…the two main challenges we face in health, in this day and age is;
* our population
* we live longer
There has never been so many of us on this little planet as now. So we need highly efficient food systems and transport systems and storage systems and well -systems.
And when it comes to food and water all, all of those systems right now use chemical additives and genetic modifications to keep the food and water flowing to us (in developed )countries. And all those added chemicals and added genetic modification and food factories and chicken factories and cow factories mean in all that food we are eating, there’s less and less – food. Less and less nutrition.
And because we no longer have fixed places in society, because there’s more and more of everything, and more and more changes, and more and more activity and rush and speed – there more and more stress. Safe to say in the entire history of our world, there has never been so much widespread stress, real and imagined put upon us. Stress affects our health. Stress affects our blood pressure. Stress kills more of us than anything else on the planet.
Yes, on average, we live longer than say 200 years ago. But we live longer because of medicine patching us up. Not because we necessarily ‘healthier’. So we love longer with more stress and less nutrition than ever before. Patched up when necessary.
Its not what you could call optimal health. If you and we are going to live so long.Lets live with the best health for the longest possible time, and take advantage of our long lives.
4 simple keys to health.
1) nutrition – make sure the food you eat is nutritious (that is, its gives your body not just the energy it needs, but all the tools it needs to stay functioning and optimal) and because that is almost impossible in this day and age – you should supplement your diet with things that make up for the lost nutrition. For instance vitamins and minerals and herbs (usually in tablet form) that add the ‘food’ to your food.
2) Stay active. Your body needs activity to stay functioning. It need activity to keep its muscles and arteries and heart and lungs and organs and bones functioning.
Go outside. walk outside, run outside, every day. You need sunshine. You need outside air (good or bad as it may be) you need activity. You need vitamin D from the sun. If you live in a place that had long winters with little sun, take extra vitamin D (see later in the series- Part 2)
3) Sleep when you sleep. Relax and have at least 7 hours sleep a day.And if you can,set aside 15mins every day or so of “quiet time”.Relax time. Sit and breathe.Don’t think, don’t fidget, don’t read, don’t watch TV. 15 mins off shut down time. Relax.
4) Have a goal in your life. Goals. Something to look forward to.Find and cultivate friends, true friends. Hope and expectation are the nutrition of our mental being. Depression like stress kills us. Have goals. Not driven ambitions. Better, simpler, things – something to look forward to. Something in the future you can enjoy, and share.Especially -have someone to share your good things with.( cat a dog, a person)

The day the Twin Towers came down, 911 NYC. Where were you on that day of terror in New York City? The day 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked 4 airplanes on September 11, 2001. In a coordinated terrorist attack within the United States they crashed them into particular sites killing a total of 2996 victims and the 19 hijackers. One airplane went down in a field in Pennsylvania due to the passengers causing mutiny against the hijackers knowing they were headed to there death! True blessed Americans used their own lives to save others by fighting against the militants in midair forcing the airplane to crash in a field rather than into innocent people. One airplane crashed into the Pentagon just outside of Washington D C. There were two airplanes that flew into the World Trade Center that morning. The first one hit the north tower at 8:45 am on that beautiful clear sky Tuesday morning followed by the second airplane 18 minutes later into the south tower.
I, myself was working in NYC in the lower west side setting up a fashion show in a small warehouse space about a half of a block from the west side drive with a handful of stagehands. It was fashion week in NYC, so we were going to build a set for a show. We loaded all of the staging, lighting and production equipment from the truck into the space for the fashion show. All went great during load in and we had a production meeting to assign certain jobs to specific individuals for setting up the gear. Everyone had begun sorting and separating the equipment into the areas in which they would be erected. The producers and managers were also there at a table with laptops, paperwork, and a radio listening to some music. The set up had begun when I stopped in my tracks due to a major rumble. I looked upward because the low sounding rumble was so strong that it felt as though the building was shaking. I can only imagine that is what an earthquake must feel like. I do not know, for I have never experienced one.
Everyone working had also stopped working for a moment due to such a strange rumble never heard before. I being the lead/supervisor for the lighting company had to take charge and command that everyone continue working. Curiosity now has become a major player in getting the work done. Most people let curiosity take control of their actions and have to have a look-see. I had to demand we keep working in order to keep within the scheduled timeline. As the next few minutes went by, the news came on about the first airplane hitting the north tower. Everyone was shocked! Now there is dismay amongst all. The questions and comments started coming out.
Shortly after the first airplane hit and the news started getting frantic, we paused work for a minute to go take a look. While many of the crew and I ran down to the West Side Hwy the client’s assistant tried to get hold of him for answers on to halt work or not due to the U.S. being under siege. As we got to the highway the second airplane, literally, came flying right over us at such a tremendously low height for something that travels at 35,000 feet. We saw it go bye but did not see it hit the 60th floor of the south tower due to the bend in the roadways and the building heights. Smoke was eminent up in the sky and pouring out of the north tower as we heard the crash happen. I never felt so perplexed and uncertain in my life. What to do?
We headed back to our job site to learn more of the situation by listening to the news. At this point I had to calm the crew down and continue working on the set up. The client had not gotten back with any decisions on the show being cancelled or going on so I pushed to keep building. As we worked there was nothing but a miserable crew giving bad and harsh comments with slow downs and stoppages until we finally got the ‘ Shut It Down ‘ call. We packed everything up, closed the space and left for the day.
Staying in New York City to do a job calls for you to rely on cabs to get around. On 9/11 in New York City immediately following the attacks we could not find a taxi cab anywhere. The streets were bare. It felt like being in a ghost town, but in the middle of NYC. No chance of getting a cab so we walked for miles in NYC with our luggage. At least it felt like that. Remember all of those who passed.
Maintaining good colon health is easy for anyone to do. You do not need to have an enema regularly and it is not medically advised to have an enema more than once or twice a year, or you could cause damage.
Check to make sure that you are not having too much oil intake in your diet. If you eat a lot of greasy food, it is time to change to a healthier diet. You can check if you are consuming to much oil when you wipe after having excreted your feces. If you have to wipe yourself clean more than a few times, there is too much oil within your food.
Drink plenty of water each and every day to help maintain the good working order of your bowels and colon area. Eight glasses of fresh mineral water should be consumed daily. Have a glass of water before and during a main meal and this will help your digestive system work at it’s best and will help to keep your colon clean.
Eating plenty of vegetables and fruit will provide your digestive system with the nutrients it needs to work efficiently for you. As your body receives these nutrients, they are spread throughout the bodies systems, providing your body with what it needs.
Eating plenty of roughage such as orange grind and oats will gently scrape away at any waste that is placed within the colon area and the digestive system itself, naturally. This helps to keep a regular and painless flow of your bodies waste products.
Enema’s are brilliant towards maintaining a good colon health because even though an enema can only be induced an average of every 6 months, it releases waste from the bowels that have been stuck for up to 6 months.
Detoxing your body can be healthily achieved on a more regular basis, if completed in a healthy manner. Ensuring you drink plenty of water during and after a detoxification. Refrain from eating any meat during a detox as the body takes longer to digest meat products and even longer to release all of it’s components through the colon and digestive system.
Carbohydrates such as rice and potatoes help to collect excess waste as they pass through the digestive system and helps to keep your stools softened as they pass through the colon area. Whilst over eating carbohydrates may give a constipated effect, ensure you stick to your required daily intake and your colon will exceed to remain in good health.
Samantha Dunkin is an expert on colon cleansing. She is currently working on an informational portal about The Master Cleanse Diet.
OK, so you think Yoga is only for people who are flexible and healthy. What’s in it for you? Yoga has been around for thousands of years for some very good reasons. They include health benefits that people in today’s society might even need more than people did 5,000 years ago – Stress Relief!
Too much stress is never a good thing. Stress releases a chemical called “cortisol” into your body. Cortisol gives you an adrenaline rush to escape a “fight or flight” situation. If you’re under constant stress you release too much cortisol and it can cause problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, fatigue and depression.
When I first started practicing Yoga it was just another form of exercise that I added to my routine. I was a stressed out single mother of three. I used exercise to reduce stress and I thought it worked pretty well. Then I started practicing Yoga and became aware of healthy changes.
I didn’t know then that there were health benefits involved, but I noticed things that once would irritate me – didn’t. If I was angry I could step back and figure out what I was angry at and why without acting out. Awareness develops in your body and mind that allows you to breathe through situations rather than stress out about them.
Consider these healthy benefits:
– Lower blood pressure
– Reduced stress and help with anxiety and depression
– Promotes muscle relaxation (helping people sleep better)
– Increases muscle strength
– Improves general fitness and flexibility
– Increases lung capacity
– Feel-good chemicals are released from your brain
– Imbalances can be balanced; repetitive stress imbalances can be straightened out.
Basically, you feel better, breathe better, stand straighter and handle stress better when you practice yoga on a regular basis. The side effects of aging can also be decreased with yoga. As we age we lose muscle strength, we are less stable on our feet and sometimes a little less sure of ourselves. Yoga works on improving balance and building strength. Yoga poses can be adjusted to make them comfortable to your body.
Yoga makes you feel younger. It is said in the wisdom of yoga that when we release muscles and the tensions they hold we feel younger. I tell people in my classes that they will feel like teenagers when they leave.
Some specific health conditions to discuss:
Women suffer through menopause Yoga is a suggested activity to alleviates some menopausal symptoms. Practicing gentle yoga relaxes you, easing some of the changes your body is going through. At the same time, you are building strength and confidence. Since menopause is something our bodies need to go through, let’s do what we can to make it easier on ourselves.
Fibromyalgia is recognized by widespread pain, often accompanied by extreme fatigue and multiple other symptoms that can be very debilitating. Yoga can help your body gently move those sore muscles. When you practice Yoga you pay more attention to your body and each part that you are working on. That ‘attention’ or awareness allows you to ease into positions and adjust poses or movements that are painful.
This information seems a little geared toward women, but men enjoy the health benefits of yoga just as much. Working in the construction industry, many of my clients look forward to a yoga class to relax them a few times a week. Some of my clients are athletes and they need the flexibility to be the best they can be in their sport. There are more men in most of my classes than people might think.
For all ages the most needed health benefit of yoga is the stress relief. An awful day of aggravations can melt away in just one yoga class. If you can allow yourself to relax and breathe, you simply stimulate your body and mind while working through poses with awareness and then you consciously relax.
Sometimes all it takes is a little lifestyle change to make you feel good. Take advantage of the health benefits of yoga. People have been practicing yoga for thousands of years. Yoga is now being researched to medically prove the physical and mental benefits.
Of course you should check with your doctor before starting any new exercise routine. I find that many doctors encourage yoga (my grandmother’s doctor and my husband’s doctor did!) But you should still check just to be on the safe side.

Whether it’s a new year’s resolution, doctor’s advice, or just a general desire to get fit and healthy, many people are always trying to get started on an exercise program that’s fun, enjoyable and effective.
Horse riding is overlooked as being a great way to improve your health and fitness, but physicians and medical specialists have been touting the great benefits of horse riding for years. Thomas Sydenham, a famous 17th Century physician stated that horse riding was better than most other forms of exercise, and the French physician Cassaign also supported horse riding as a powerful form of therapy. Today, it is well known that there are plenty of reasons horse riding is great for your health. Here are just a few:
• Exercise
Horse riding requires you to use your muscles to stay upright and on the horse as you’re trotting or galloping around. Inner thigh muscles are needed to grip the horse, as well as your arms to steer the horse in different directions, and your core muscles to keep you sitting upright and balanced. It’s a great way to get toned while enjoying the outdoors too!
• Coordination
Riding a horse also takes a great deal of coordination, as you must adjust your own movements with those of the horse. Especially if you’re riding at higher speeds or even jumping over things, you need to be able to shift your body in such a way that you don’t get thrown off the horse.
• Psychological benefits
Horse riding also has benefits to the emotional and mental wellbeing of the rider. Developing a relationship with a horse, looking after it, as well as cooperation with others with improve the rider’s mood and psychological strength. Horse riding may seem like an individual sport, but learning and training with others is important and beneficial to the wellbeing of the rider. If you’re in the market for a horse for leisure riding, especially for your child, you should be looking for warmbloods for sale, as their mild temperament makes them perfect for learners.
• Therapeutic riding
Horse riding also has proven benefits for those with various mental and physical disabilities. It has been shown to improve the health and wellbeing of those with things like downs syndrome, cerebral palsy and even hearing problems by improving their physical health, muscle tone, and ability to interact with an animal and with other riders.
If you’ve started looking for horses for sale, head online – there are heaps of classified ads for warmbloods, ponies, and quarter horses for sale.
What Meditation Is
Simply put, meditation is sitting still and quieting your mind. It is the act of being totally present with what is, without making mental commentary. When you meditate, you are in the most pristine, natural state of being. In other words, your mind is quiet and you are just being. Think of meditating as the freedom to just be. Theres no pressure. There are no deadlines. And while there are a lot of different styles of meditation, theres really no right or wrong way to do it. You are simply in a calming, peaceful state of being. I believe that when you are in this quiet state of mind, you are a human being, instead of a human doing
While youll find that meditation is peaceful, its not exactly peace of mind. However, meditation is freedom from the mind. By that, I mean that during meditation, your mind will be free from your egoic thoughts or mental commentaries. The egoic mind gets conditioned to build up a sort of wall around who you are.
Meditation breaks down that wall so that the mental commentary (mind chatter) isnt there. Meditation allows you to say, Who am I if I am not these thoughts? This is the most important question on the planet. And its through meditation that you can ask that all-important question and to go into yourself for true self-discovery. You see, when you are meditating, you are thought-free, and you lose the sense of fear and desire. If youre in a state of fearing something, then you are in a state of wanting something.
Physical Effects of Stress
Lets face it. Were living in very stressful times. If stress is allowed to continue over an extended length of time, the result can be bad for both your mind and your body. Let me give you an analogy to demonstrate this point. Hold out your arm straight at shoulder level. Keeping it in that position probably wont bother you at first, but the longer you hold it there, the more it will hurt. The pain will get worse and worse until you cant stand it any longer. Finally, there will be so much pain that youll have to drop your arm to your side. Stress is like that. In the beginning, it may not bother you much, but over an extended period of time, it will take a toll on your health, both physically and mentally.
Studies show that prolonged stress can weaken the immune system and lead to a plethora of health problems, like high blood pressure, one of the biggest killers on the planet. In fact, studies show that stress-related illnesses account for more than 60{3813292df256cc7359db914c8bfffc508a0964aa786224d36d2cb21f4b33d600} of all doctor visits in this country. Unfortunately, most people alleviate their stress with things like alcohol, chocolate, or prescription drugs. But simply numbing the pain by depending on one or more of these crutches isnt the long-term answer. Instead, why not practice daily meditation? It has been scientifically documented that meditation lowers blood pressure by allowing you to completely relax your body and clear your mind. Meditation reportedly reduces stress-induced hormones in the blood, alleviating anxiety, anger and many types of illness.
Thats right. Meditation can help with illnesses. Scientific studies have shown that meditation not only helps with stress reduction, it can also actually increase physical healing. It has been successfully used to help patients suffering with everything from cat allergies, to heart palpitations, to back pain.
How is this possible? Being in a meditative state increases the amount of endorphins produced by the brain, and its these endorphins that can assist our bodies in the healing process. These same endorphins make us feel happy and give us a positive, uplifted sensation. I call it the ultimate natural high!
Initially, when people begin to meditate, they might not feel much. If this happens to you after a few times of trying to meditate, dont get discouraged. Like everything else, meditation takes practice. And remember, practice makes perfect! Everybody who has meditated consistently for a while will tell you that meditation is very relaxing and peaceful. If you practice meditation long enough and regularly enough, that peacefulness will be carried with you throughout the day.

We all know that we should drink lots of water, suggested amounts are upwards of 1.5litres a day (The British Dietetic Association advises that we should consume 2.5 litres a day to remain healthy). However there is a lot of controversy; do tea and coffee count? How about squash or herbal tea? Should you have an extra glass for each alcoholic drink?
The following report will try and answer the following questions:
Why do our bodies need water?
How much water should I drink?
What are the benefits of lots of water?
What are the risks of not having enough water?
How do I know if I’m dehydrated?
Can we have too much water?
How does water help weight loss?
Why our bodies need water?
Water makes up 50-70{3813292df256cc7359db914c8bfffc508a0964aa786224d36d2cb21f4b33d600} of our body weight and without it we would die within a matter of days. Water is involved in many of our bodily processes and functions, it helps regulate temperature, flushes out waste products and provides a medium in which essential chemical and biological reactions occur. Water is lost through urine, sweat and vapour from the lungs – it needs to be replenished on a regular basis.
How much water should I drink?
There is no set figure as it depends on your age, sex, metabolism, activity levels, diet and many other factors. However 2 litres of water is sufficient for most people; if you are hugely active or live in a very hot climate, this should be increased to 3 litres. Other fluids such as squash, tea and coffee can count towards our total intake but if you are drinking water for health, 2 litres of plain water is ideal, plus your other liquids. There is no need to buy bottled water as tap water (in the UK at least) is of a perfectly acceptable standard.
What are the benefits of lots of water?
Where do I start?! Our bodies are clever things and can function on minimal amounts of water or fluids. But for our bodies to function at their best, for us to feel healthy, energetic and stay slim, we need more than just a glass or 2. Lots of water can help to prevent many ailments such as headaches, heartburn, kidney problems, raised blood pressure, skin complaints and problems with dental and oral health. It helps with concentration, keeps us active by preventing fatigue and boosts metabolism. Water keeps the cells of our skin and muscles plump so making us look more radiant, generally younger and decreasing wrinkles. Water is a great diet aid.
What are the risks of not having enough?
Insufficient water will ultimately lead to death, but few of us will get this far! However millions of people are chronically dehydrated leading to poor functioning of the body. Headaches, fatigue, bad skin, poor concentration, urinary tract infections, kidney stones and poor digestion can all be caused by dehydration.
How do I know if I’m dehydrated?
Feeling thirsty is a sign of dehydration so it is a good idea to pre-empt this and drink before the feeling of thirst kicks in. Initial symptoms of dehydration also include fatigue, headaches, lack of concentration, followed by constipation and, in the longer term, kidney stones (which are apparently one of the most painful things a human can suffer from – the closest a man can get to childbirth!). Having dark coloured, concentrated urine is also a sign of dehydration, but do bear in mind that coloured food such as beetroot and synthetic vitamins (especially B vitamins) can change the colour of our urine.
Can we have too much?
In a word, yes. This is relatively rare, and not something most of us need to worry about, but drinking vast amounts of water in a short space of time can upset the balance of salts in our bodies and be dangerous. This can occur in marathon runners who are constantly rehydrating throughout the race, but not eating anything to replenish salts lost.
How does water help weight loss?
Thirst is often mistaken for hunger, our bodies find it very difficult to distinguish between the 2 feelings. So having a glass of water when you feel hungry can stop the feelings of hunger and work as an appetite suppressant. Most food (especially fruit and vegetables) contain water, so when our bodies crave food, it may well be the water contained in them that we actually need. When we eat out of thirst, instead of hunger, our bodies are taking in a lot of unnecessary calories, simply because we need more fluid.
One of the main functions of your liver is to break down fat. It also helps out your kidneys if they are not functioning as effectively as they could (it does a lot of other good stuff too!). If we are not consuming enough water, our kidneys aren’t working at their best, so the liver lends a hand – meaning its job of breaking down fat is put on a backburner…..and the fat stays in our bodies.
Most of the chemical reactions in the body happen in water and when there is not enough water, all these reactions slow down – and that includes our metabolism. There are no concrete figures on this but one study showed that after drinking about 0.5 litres of water, participants’ metabolism (the rate at which calories are burnt) increased by 30{3813292df256cc7359db914c8bfffc508a0964aa786224d36d2cb21f4b33d600}. They estimate that drinking an extra 1.5 litres of water a day can lead to a weight loss of 5lb over a year. If the water is cold, more calories are burnt as our bodies need to heat it before it can be absorbed.
The benefits of drinking water are endless, it really should be obvious that we should all be drinking a minimum of 1.5 litres of plain water everyday, and when we start to do this we will notice improvements in our health and vitality within days, if not hours! So grab a glass now and get started!

On the subject of Raynaud’s and Me there is a very uncomfortable disease or syndrome or phenomenon that has a complete hold on my body.I do remember a bit with my mother always complaining about how cold her hands got and her fingers getting numb from the cold. I am not sure if this disease is handed down through genes or not, but at 57 years old Raynaud’s has it out for me. For years now I have had much difficulty with cold temperatures and my extremities; nose, ear lobes, fingers (not just the tips), toes and feet and even knee caps in extreme cold weather. Start to alleviate symptoms with good gloves.
When the cold weather starts to appear Raynaud’s starts to kick in as soon as my body recognizes cold. I believe that our mind and body react to environmental changes with out our intent to adapt. So, as soon as my body senses a bit of cold it starts retracting all of my blood to my body’s core to sustain warmpth where the body needs it most to survive. Therefore, very little blood flows to the tips of our appendages leaving them accessible to very little internal body heat which is produced by the blood flowing through our body. No blood flow no body heat which leaves us to freeze. If you think about when a body dies and has zero life there is no heart pumping hot blood throughout our system to keep the body warm. When a body dies the blood flow stops and the heat dissipates till the body becomes cold and stiff.
When you have Raynuad’s your body reacts very quickley and before you know it your fingers are starting to get numb and putting gloves on may be to late. It appears to me that when this reaction happens it will have to be ridden out and it takes some time for the fingers to thaw out. I was making juice this morning and when pealing oranges with my fingers and my body reacted so my left index and middle finger went numb and froze. I ran hot water over them and then had to go sit near my fireplace for a while till my hand warmed up. I had previously stepped out my front door to get some firewood to get my wood stove going, other than that I hadn’t even been outside and Raynaud’s still got my left hand, very uncomfortable. Fear runs through your mind that you are going to freeze. It Sucks! I only wish to stay warm. Very hard to do in wintertime. A waming creme may help.
Laughter: The Best Medicine
Love laughing: it’s the best medicine.
Laughter, they say, is the best medicine. If you are like me you will agree. I wholly believe that there is no better way to lighten up someone’s mood. Making people happy by way of laughter is super easy. Don’t you love it when you can help that particular person lighten up their lousy mood? As I said, it is super easy to do. If you can make a comment to that special person of your choosing that will cause them to change their train of thought, then you have broken their moment of being miserable. That will most times bring a laugh. That tiny couple of seconds in a person’s life can bring such a great relief of stress. This will give a fresh start to the project, causing the unhappiness to dissipate and, many times, completely vanish. It is many times the smallest of gestures and thoughts being individualized that can be the best medicine. If the joke or comment is personalized, the greater impact it will have.
Laughter comes about in many different ways. You can tell a joke or riddle, make a funny face, hear a comical story, watch an entertaining video, comedy movie, or film, etc… There are books and comics and all sorts of things written for comedy. Even the newspapers and many magazines feature comic strips spread throughout the publication. Television is filled with Sitcoms that are comedic shows. You can go to a live play that is a comedy. Back in the old days, there was Vaudeville in the live theaters. These are all intended to get a laugh, whether it be a smile, a happy thought, or even a great feeling of happiness. Laughter can be generated in so many different ways.
I really enjoy laughing like most people. I especially enjoy bringing a touch of laughter to others. Especially those who show stress and unhappiness. I truly believe that making someone laugh is a major key to helping others. Causing laughter, like comedians, is such a positive action. Who can say no to a simple laugh? The Grinch, maybe. Haha! See, I just made a funny. You may not have laughed just then, but I believe you had to change the thinking pattern right here while reading this blog. If you thought about the Grinch for one iota of a second, I just caused you a moment of happiness. That is one of the most important things that I can do in life. Bring a laugh to everyone if I can. I really prefer those tiny little individual laughs. The more personal the comment the better the impact.
Simple entertainment is always good for reducing stress. Laughter sometimes will take the stress away completely. Any one person could always use a stress reducer. The more wound-up people get, the more it is needed to laugh and get rid of that tension. Stress will kill people, whereas laughter tends to prolong life. I believe the more we laugh, the less our heart tightens up, and the more tension we carry, the more stress on our heart muscles. Like I said, stress will kill! So laugh as much as possible and live a long, happy life.
Can you help others laugh?
